If gardening is America's favorite hobby, growing the healthiest veggies, fruits and flowers should make composting a close second.
Though some lists include it at various spots in the top 5, gardening is widely believed to be the most popular hobby in America. If that is the case, then certainly gardening’s companion hobby should be a close second — composting!
Indeed, there is no better source than compost for growing healthy, organic flowers, fruits and vegetables.
As noted in the intro to my post on the History of Composting:
Modern society has grown so accustomed to quick-fix solutions by artificial means that many tried and true methods, that have proven effective for millennia, have fallen by the wayside. As the history of composting proves, farming and gardening practices are no exception.
Since primitive times man has created compost, a combination of decomposed organic waste that is rich in nutrients for creating healthy soil, which in turn feeds plants.
Only in the past century has synthetic chemical fertilizer become the norm, so prevalent in fact that to many people composting is a new concept even though it dates back thousands of years.

The most enjoyable hobbies are those you can do with family and friends (young and old), gardening and composting included.
In other words, feed your soil healthy organic fertilizer (i.e., compost) and your soil will grow healthy organic plants!
Specifically, adding compost to your garden:
- Provides the perfect balance of nutrients: Nitrogen, Carbon, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sulfur, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Boron and Manganese
- Improves water absorption, drainage and retention
- Grows stronger plants more resistant to insects and disease
Best of all, composting need not be messy, time-consuming or complicated. In fact, with today’s innovative composting equipment, it most certainly is clean, efficient and simple enough to become a popular hobby indeed.
